When people think of rooftop solar, manufacturing plants are often the first application that comes to mind. However, for industrial park developers, technical infrastructure also presents significant opportunities to improve energy efficiency through solar power.
Within an industrial park, substations serve as the central hubs for receiving and distributing electricity across the park while also supplying power to their own auxiliary loads required for daily operations. Installing rooftop solar on these facilities allows developers to utilize existing roof space, reduce electricity costs for internal consumption, and improve overall energy efficiency.

Recently, the rooftop solar system at Amata Substation 1&2 was officially commissioned at Song Khoai Industrial Park, Quang Ninh Province. The project has a total installed capacity of 108.5 kWp, with Amata Ha Long Urban Joint Stock Company as the project owner and SolarBK serving as the EPC contractor.
Previously, SolarBK, Banpu NEXT, and Amata VN announced their strategic partnership to develop 227 MWp of rooftop solar systems across the Amata industrial parks in Vietnam. Alongside manufacturing facilities, industrial infrastructure has also been identified as a suitable application for renewable energy solutions. The Amata Ha Long Substation 1&2 project is one of the projects implemented under this strategic roadmap.
Leveraging Existing Infrastructure
The project benefited from several favorable conditions arising from Amata Ha Long's existing infrastructure and operational model.
As the developer and operator of the industrial park, Amata Ha Long has actively invested in solutions that improve the energy efficiency of its technical infrastructure. The substation roof offered suitable conditions for solar installation, while daytime electricity demand enables effective utilization of solar-generated power.
In addition, because the project owner also manages and operates the industrial park's electrical network, the grid connection process was streamlined and did not require an export power control system, which is commonly needed in many other rooftop solar projects.
For SolarBK, previous project experience at Song Khoai Industrial Park provided the engineering team with a thorough understanding of the site's construction conditions, safety procedures, and coordination requirements with local operating units. This helped shorten project preparation time and minimize implementation risks.
During project implementation, SolarBK proactively optimized the technical solution to suit actual site conditions, ensuring construction progress while fully meeting the project owner’s technical requirements.
Delivering Solar on an Operating Substation
Alongside these advantages, the project also presented several unique technical challenges.
Unlike conventional rooftop solar installations on factory buildings, this system was constructed on an operating electrical substation, where strict electrical safety requirements had to be maintained throughout the project. Every construction activity was carefully planned and controlled to ensure the safety of personnel, equipment, and uninterrupted operation of the power system.
Furthermore, Amata Substation 2 features a flat roof, requiring a dedicated mounting structure designed to ensure structural integrity, long-term stability, and system durability.
During implementation, SolarBK continuously reviewed and optimized engineering solutions based on actual site conditions while maintaining the project schedule and fully meeting the owner's technical requirements.
Drawing on extensive experience in delivering solar projects for industrial facilities and infrastructure, SolarBK developed customized construction plans for each work package and worked closely with the project owner to ensure Safety – Quality – Schedule throughout the entire implementation process.
The commissioning of the system not only helps reduce electricity costs, improve energy efficiency, and lower CO₂ emissions from the industrial park’s infrastructure, but also represents a concrete step in Amata Ha Long’s green transition strategy.
Rooftop Solar Beyond Manufacturing Facilities
The successful commissioning of this project demonstrates that rooftop solar is not limited to manufacturing plants. When properly designed to match operational requirements, it can also be effectively deployed on industrial infrastructure such as electrical substations.
Expanding rooftop solar applications to technical infrastructure enables industrial park developers to maximize the value of existing assets, optimize operational costs, improve energy efficiency, and progressively advance their sustainability objectives.
Beyond manufacturing facilities, SolarBK provides consulting, engineering, and EPC services for rooftop solar systems across a wide range of industrial infrastructure, including substations, administration buildings, warehouses, and other auxiliary facilities.
